The feature detection algorithms in OpenCV have saved me a lot of time in the past, work well, and will continue to get better (FOSS FTW!). This article compares STAR, FAST, and SURF (and others) using various metrics, and even includes a version comparison between 2.2 and 2.3.1. Nice!
